Consistency is Key: The Power of Persistence in Podcasting

Consistency

(Because Rome Wasn't Built in a Day, and Neither Was Your Loyal Listenership)

You've recorded your first episode, hit publish, and maybe even had a few downloads. Grrreat! (Thanks, Tony!) But let's face it, building a successful podcast isn't a sprint; it's a marathon. And in this race, consistency and persistence are your secret weapons.

Why Consistency Matters

Consistency is the cornerstone of podcast success. Here's why:

  • Builds Trust: Regular releases show your audience that you're committed to providing valuable content. They come to rely on your steadfastness. You become the foundation of a solid building–the base upon which knowledge can be structured.

  • Grows Your Audience: Search engines and podcast directories favor consistent content, boosting your discoverability. The more content to sift through, the more opportunity web crawlers (Not Spiderman) have to pick up your info and disseminate it!

  • Creates a Habit: Listeners are more likely to tune in if they know when to expect new episodes. It might sound a bit insidious, but you are building a habit for your listeners, every Tuesday at noon, they tune in to listen to your new podcast (or whenever you drop one). Forming a habit in your audience creates that muscle memory, that feeling of missing out if they are not engaged with you. The pull is real! Like that first cup of coffee in the morning.

Persistence: The Unsung Hero of Podcasting

Let's be honest, the podcasting world is crowded. It takes time, effort, and unwavering determination to stand out. Here's how persistence pays off:

  • Overcoming Obstacles: The podcasting journey is filled with challenges. Persistence helps you navigate setbacks and keep pushing forward. Each new obstacle forces you to re-think, re-evaluate and find a way over, through or around. (*philosophical note here: think of obstacles not as hurdles, but exercises to make yourself better!)

  • Building Momentum: Consistency creates a snowball effect. The more episodes you release, the larger your audience becomes. Also, the larger of an archive you have to draw from.

  • Long-Term Success: Podcasting is a marathon, not a sprint. Persistence ensures you're in it for the long haul, building a sustainable and successful podcast.

Tips for Maintaining Consistency and Persistence

  • Set Realistic Goals: Start with achievable goals and gradually increase your output as your podcast grows. Don’t take aim at your end goal, make your first goal something that you can accomplish–something that will inspire you to do more.

  • Create a Content Calendar: Plan your episodes in advance to stay organized and consistent. Build a scaffolding around your podcast. Print out that Mapquest directions (showing my age here!)

  • Join a Podcast Community: Connect with other podcasters for support, motivation, and accountability. Networking is your lifeblood in this crazy industry! Reach out, connect with me!

  • Celebrate Small Wins: Acknowledge your progress, no matter how small, to stay motivated. Keep it going!

Remember:

  • Consistency Doesn't Mean Perfection: It's okay to make mistakes or experiment with different formats.

  • Listener Feedback Matters: Use feedback to improve your content and keep your audience engaged.

  • Patience is a Virtue: Building a successful podcast takes time. Don't get discouraged by slow growth in the beginning.

The Power of Persistence

Consistency and persistence are the unsung heroes of podcasting success. By staying committed to your craft and delivering value to your audience, you'll build a loyal following and create a podcast that stands the test of time. So, keep pushing forward, embrace the journey, and let your podcasting dreams take flight!
