Podcasting is a great way to share your ideas and connect with an audience, but it can also be challenging. There are a number of technical issues that can arise, and it can be difficult to know how to deal with them if you're not experienced or very technically savvy. Murphy’s Law will always be a problem…’If it can go wrong–it will!’
Here are some tips for dealing with common podcasting challenges and technical issues:
Poor audio quality. This is one of the most common podcasting challenges. There are a number of things that can cause poor audio quality, such as using a low-quality microphone, recording in a noisy environment, or not editing your audio properly.
To improve your audio quality, make sure you're using a good microphone and recording in a quiet environment. You should also edit your audio to remove any unwanted noise and ensure that the levels are consistent. Editing out excess silences can help tighten the pacing. I would also suggest trying recording in your car. Not while driving, but a parked car can offer a great inexpensive ‘sound booth’ space.
Technical problems. Technical problems can occur at any time during the podcasting process, from recording to editing to publishing. Some common technical problems include computer crashes, software glitches, and internet outages.
The best way to deal with technical problems is to be prepared. Have a backup plan in case something goes wrong. For example, if you're recording using a computer, make sure you have a battery-powered backup recorder in case your computer crashes. Also, back-up, back-up, BACK-UP! Always keep a backup of all your records. ALWAYS!
Editing challenges. Editing can be one of the most time-consuming aspects of podcasting. It's important to be patient and learn the basics of editing software. There are many tutorials available online and in books. One of the best ways of learning is by doing. Record 20 minutes of you just chatting and follow along with a tutorial on YouTube. Here, I Googled that for you!
If you're struggling with editing, you may want to consider hiring a professional editor. This can save you a lot of time and hassle. MW Studio Services can do that for you too! I mean, why not email us? Contact Us.
Monetization challenges. It can be difficult to monetize your podcast, especially if you're just starting out. There are a number of different ways to monetize your podcast, such as advertising, sponsorships, and premium content.
It's important to experiment with different monetization strategies to see what works best for your podcast and audience. You may also want to consider joining a podcast network, which can help you with monetization and other aspects of podcasting. There are many hosting sites that offer monetization when just starting out. Check them out, here’s one that I use: https://transistor.fm/ (and again, I am not sponsored by them…yet) Wink, wink.
