How to Edit Your Podcast Episodes like a Pro

Updated: Aug 31, 2023

You have recorded your podcast episodes, now it's time to edit them. Editing is an important part of the podcasting process, and it can make a big difference in the quality of your show. I am sure you have listened to some not-so-good-quality podcasts. By editing and tweaking what you have done, you set yourself above the rest. Editing can take up a ton of time in the beginning, that is until you find what works for you and get your workflow narrowed down.

Here are some tips for editing your podcast episodes like a pro:

  1. Use the right software. There are many different podcast editing software available, so choose one that's right for you. Some popular options include Audacity, GarageBand, and Adobe Audition. Watch reviews and how-to’s on YouTube. Finding a software program you understand and are confident in can really make the process less of a chore.

  2. Trim out the dead air. This means removing any long pauses or silences from your recordings. This will do several things for each episode. First, it will make your episodes shorter. This will also make the pacing or timing of the show quicker.

  3. Remove any mistakes. This includes things like flubbed words, mispronounced words, and awkward pauses. You may start by recording your podcast with a ton of ums and ahs in there. That is natural. You’ll learn how speaking these non-words makes you sound. Editing your own podcast can definitely help you understand your speech and what sounds professional and engaging. This is a dual-purpose tip, as it can and should be used as a self-discovery tool!

  4. Level the audio. This means making sure that the volume of your audio is consistent throughout your episode. You remember, back in the day (yeah, I hate the saying too), when commercials seemed to be louder than the actual show. Well, you don’t want some words or phrases to be overly loud or too quiet.

  5. Add music and sound effects. This can help to improve the overall production value of your show. Music can change the tone of your podcast. Don’t believe me?

  6. Export your episode. Once you're happy with your edit, export your episode in the correct format for your podcast hosting platform. Learn the preferred format for whatever hosting platform you are using. This can usually be discovered on the FAQ page.

Here are some additional tips for independent podcast producers:

  • Get feedback from listeners. Ask your listeners what they think of the editing of your podcast episodes. This will help you identify any areas where you can improve. Hmmm, where have we heard this before?

  • Use a podcast editing service. If you don't have the time or skills to edit your podcast episodes yourself, you can hire a podcast editing service to do it for you. Hint, hint, MW Studio Services can help you with that!

  • Promote your podcast. Once you've edited your podcast episodes, you need to promote them so that people will listen to them. Share your episodes on social media, submit them to directories, and run ads.

By following these tips, you can edit your podcast episodes like a pro and create a high-quality show that your listeners will love.
