How to Monetize Your Podcast: Advertising, Sponsorships, and Patreon

Right, you’ve got a few episodes in the can, and you are ready to upload and start this amazing journey of publishing your content. What’s next? Keyword: Monetization! There are many different ways to monetize your podcast, but the most common methods are advertising, sponsorships, and Patreon. We’ll take a look at these three to start you off.

Advertising

Advertising is a great way to monetize your podcast if you have a large audience. You may also be able to monetize if you have a small audience! You can sell ad space to companies that are interested in reaching your listeners. There are a number of different ways to sell ad space, such as direct sales, podcast advertising networks, and dynamic ad insertion. Here’s a super secret tip: depending on your location, local businesses might want to buy a small ad or even sponsor an episode.

Sponsorships

Sponsorships are similar to advertising, but they are typically more involved. With a sponsorship, the company will pay to have its brand associated with your podcast. You will create host-read advertising, making sure to mention them (all specified in a contract beforehand) This may involve mentioning the company in your podcast episodes, creating sponsored episodes, or running social media campaigns for the company. LinkedIn has a great short article on Podcast Sponsorships.

Patreon

Patreon is a platform that allows you to create a membership program for your podcast. Your listeners can pledge a monthly amount to support your show. In return, they may receive exclusive content, such as early access to episodes, bonus episodes, or behind-the-scenes content. You should always make sure they have exclusive content that only they can access. Think of it as their bonus for buying you a cup of coffee! Check out Patreon here.

Which monetization method is right for you?

The best monetization method for you will depend on your audience size, the type of content you create, and your goals. If you have a large audience, you may be able to generate a significant amount of revenue from advertising or sponsorships. If you have a smaller audience, you may want to consider Patreon or other membership programs.

How to get started with monetization

Once you've decided which monetization method or methods is right for you, you need to start marketing your podcast to potential advertisers or sponsors. You can do this by creating a media kit, which is a one-page document that outlines your podcast's audience demographics, listenership statistics, and monetization options. You can also reach out to potential advertisers or sponsors directly.

If you're considering Patreon, you need to create a Patreon page and start promoting it to your listeners. You can do this by including a link to your Patreon page in your podcast episodes, show notes, and website.
