How to Start Your Own Podcast: A Beginner's Guide

So you wanna start a podcast, huh? Well, you've come to the right place. I'm gonna give you the lowdown on how to get started, without all the technical stuff–that will come later, when you are really getting into it. As an independent podcast producer, we’ve been there, done that and had the growing pains so you don’t have to! I’m putting this in an easy-to-follow step-by-step formula, but this doesn’t mean you have to follow it word for word. The journey is different for everyone.

Step 1: Pick a topic

What are you passionate about? What do you know a lot about or want to know about? Find a topic or set of topics that you wouldn’t mind doing a lot of research on! Once you know your topic, you can start brainstorming episode ideas. Here is a perfect opportunity for you to check out some AI ideas in order to help you brainstorm or organize. Using the right tools can really help your creativity.

Step 2: Come up with a name

Your podcast name should be catchy and memorable. It should also give people a good idea of what your show is about. You shouldn’t be doing a podcast called Frankenstein if you are doing a podcast on Flower Arranging! If you're stuck, try brainstorming a list of words or phrases that relate to your topic. Maybe make it a bit punny? Then, play around with different combinations until you find something you like.

Step 3: Create podcast art

Your podcast art is what people will see when they see your show in a podcast directory or search engine. It should be eye-catching and relevant to your topic. If you're not a graphic designer, there are plenty of websites that can help you create a professional-looking podcast art for free. Check out Canva as an example. Do a lot of research, look at what is popular, look at similar types of podcasts and imitate either their colour or composition, but DO NOT COPY! Make it your own. (Again, no hard and fast rules here.)

Step 4: Record your first episode

This is where the fun starts! You can record your podcast in your bedroom, your kitchen, or even your car. Just make sure you have a quiet place where you won't be interrupted. Or your upstairs neighbour is training an elephant in gymnastics. If you don't have any recording equipment, you can use your smartphone. Consumer electronics are getting better and better. The important part here–have fun.

Step 5: Edit your episode

Once you've recorded your episode, you'll need to edit it. This means removing any ums, errs, and other mistakes or long pauses. You can also add music or sound effects to make your episode more interesting. Be careful of using copyrighted music here.

Step 6: Publish your episode

Once you're happy with your episode, you can publish it. There are a number of different podcast hosting services available. Some of the most popular ones include Buzzsprout, Podbean, and SoundCloud.

Step 7: Promote your podcast

Now that your podcast is live, you need to let people know about it. Share it on social media, get your friends and family on board about sharing it, and submit it to podcast directories.

Here are a few bonus tips for independent podcast producers:

  • Don't be afraid to experiment. There are no hard and fast rules when it comes to podcasting. So try different things and see what works for you.

  • Be yourself. People can tell when you're being fake, so just be yourself and let your personality shine through.

  • Get help from a professional. If you're not sure how to do something, don't be afraid to ask for help from a professional podcast producer. MW Studio Services can help you with everything from recording and editing to promoting your podcast.
